Transparency, comfort and modernity are the hallmarks of the ICE-Rail Terminal at Frankfurt Airport. The heart of this building is the glass dome, which arches above the concourse of the Rail Terminal at the connection to the airport’s Terminal 3. Extensive glass facades to the Platform level below allow daylight to enter the building, creating a friendly and spacious atmosphere. Within the ‘underbelly’, with a view of the platforms, are the waiting rooms for the travellers. The slim, rounded form of the rail terminal stretches for a length of around 700m over the railtracks. The distinctively shaped platform of approximately 34 000 sqm can be extended almost as on a green field site. Up to 180 000 sqm of floor space can be built over the platform; all loads from the future construction will be carried by the Platform. The platform protects the railtracks by acting as a horizontal ‘shield’, thereby permitting rail services to continue without disruption during the construction phase.
