In Hamburg’s Friedrich-Ebert-Damm, an exclusive car showroom has been created from an old industrial shed with a gas station in it’s forecourt. The structure and geometry of the main building have been retained as the basis for a new architectural concept for a showroom, a workshop, and a garage for oldtimers, as well as offices and storage space. After the building was stripped to the core, and the gas station was demolished, the sheds received a new roof; an additional half-bay extension to the shallow pitched-roof construction was placed in front of the sheds, and enclosed with a glass facade to the streetfront. The planar facade was the first to be built in Germany. The impressive glazed areas allow generous uninterrupted views into the showroom behind. In order to reduce distracting reflections, the glass facade was inclined ten degrees from vertical. A water feature in front of the showroom reflects light from outside, and a bridge leads over it to the entrance. In the rear part of the building, offices and special areas are completed as white, plastered elements, arranged in a “building within a building” manner.
