The Dorint Hotel in Hamburg’s Rentzelstrasse, is situated at a significant urban interface: the university and trade and conference centre areas, come together at this point in a north-south direction, while at this intersection, the transition from city-centre to surrounding districts occurs, in an east-west direction. The hotel, with 180 rooms, conference rooms, a restaurant, parking, and plant rooms, fills a gap-site in the existing urban block structure, on the corner of Schröderstiftstraße. The angular building responds to the attic and roof heights of the neighbouring, predominantly six-storey buildings. Where the facades meet, there is a ten-storey tower on the corner, which imposes itself upon the urban context. By means of set-backs and overlapping elements, the individual elements do not appear to be placed beside one another, but rather, they intersect and are interconnected with one another, or separated. The separation is achieved by forming a gap, which is filled with aluminium louvres: elements which visually interrupt the curtain wall facade, with it’s irregularly ordered transparent and opaque panels. This breaks down the monolithic form of the building and suggests lightness.
