Projects / Public space / - Glasspavilion St.Nikolai Church
During the Second World War, Hamburg’s Nikolaikirche was virtually completely destroyed, and only the tower, the vaulted crypt and some of the external walls from the nave survived. Today, the ruins serve as a memorial to the victims of the worldwide disaster. Within the context of an invited competition, BRT Architekten designed a pavilion, which was harmoniously inserted into the existing remains. The design, which was awarded the first prize, envisages a timber construction in the former choir area. Eight arches enclose the space. The pavilion is enclosed by a glass skin, which doesn’t detract from the views of the existing building. Thus, a new entity is created within the ruins. The light construction, which is directly related to the size and scale of the former nave, can be demounted at will, without leaving any traces. Lectures, readings, concerts, prayer meetings and other events could take place in the pavillion.
