Autonomy without isolation: that is the theme, which lay behind the design of the offices for Swiss Re in Unterföhring-Park. In autonomous office units, arranged in a windmill pattern around a central core, employees can concentrate on team and project work, without losing the feeling of ‘belonging’ to other groups. Generous glass-facades offer views into surrounding offices, while bridges between the units of the floating structures ensure short and direct routes, for quick, interpersonal contact between the employees. A main central corridor, planned as a circuit, connects all work areas: meetings and openness are thus ensured. Embedded between water features, clearings and groups of planting, the building fits into it’s landscape harmoniously, and generates a friendly and relaxed working atmosphere for employees and visitors. Thus, the building generates a similar atmosphere, and relationship to it’s surroundings as the former office building, situated within the natural beauty of Munich’s Englischer Garten. Lightness, transparency and nature are the features of the prize-winning design. In an industrial area lacking a mature character, our building points the way forward for other projects in terms of urban planning.
